EDITORIAL
Winter has finally given way to spring and with it comes the desire to paint in the open air. Watercolour is, as everyone knows, the art of light and therefore a medium that is in tune with the seasons and close to nature. Should a common denominator be found for all the artists present in this spring issue, it would undoubtedly be a shared desire to celebrate life itself.
Whether it is the magnificent landscapes of Marc Folly and Sergey Temerev, the meandering rivers of Myanmar depicted by Ye Yint Myint Naing, the imaginary cities of Viktoria Prischedko inspired by the places she visits for her workshops and master classes, the dazzling floral compositions of Frank Liao XiaoPing, or the homage paid to the animal world by Maryse Louis, all these artists have at heart to celebrate the life force of our universe. This celebration may also sometimes be a tribute to human activity, notably with the watercolour collection of the Hilbert Museum in California, which remains an important testimony to the urban, economic and cultural growth of the West Coast of the United States. Whatever their style, their approach and favourite subjects, all the artists in this issue reveal to us the mysteries of nature at its most beautiful using just the tip of their brush, and of course their talent. In their time, the Goncourt Brothers praised Chardin for his ability to render for each fruit “the flavour of its colours, the fuzz of its skin, the pulp of its flesh”. Let us in turn praise the watercolourists for their vitality in rendering in painting both the pulp and the flesh of our world.
