The Art of Watercolour 31st issue - Artists from all over the world

ARTIST CHALLENGE: the subtle art of portrait painting. With Richard Tiejun Chao, Olga Kharchenko and Jenny Medved. Portraits may indeed be one of the most arduous subjects artists can tackle in watercolour. Expressing emotions and rendering the likeness of the model are indeed two of the main challenges painters have to face. We asked Jenny Medved, Richard Chao and Olga Kharchenko to share their thoughts on the question.

EDITORIAL
Watercolour truly is an international community, bringing together artists from the world over. It is a way to meet people and make friends. United in their belief that watercolour is the technique that best suits their artistic expression, watercolourists form a close-knit but nevertheless open community. This is what we are trying to show through this magazine, through our different features from the four corners and far reaches of the world. Whether it is Gail Sutherland and her landscapes of the Canadian coast, bathed in sunlight, the faces of the Indian peoples delicately portrayed by Patricia Guzman, the colourful animals of Renate van Dongen, or the dazzling transparencies of Harry Price or even the marked contrasts of Yaming Cai, this issue flies over all the continents, as if all these artists form a strong community. Of which you, of course, are also a part, dear reader. You have the opportunity to participate in our Readers’ Contest (which is becoming increasingly popular), to peruse our Call for Entries sections in order to apply for exhibitions and competitions (which can be found at the end of this issue), and even to plan your next artistic outings thanks to our What’s On section. If watercolour forms a large family it is first and foremost thanks to you…
So hats off to all of you!
