The unique nature of watercolour is widely known and is certainly no mystery to you, dear readers. As we are all aware, no other artistic medium is capable of rendering transparency, light and the smoothness of colour. But watercolour is much more than that. No other technique is capable of bringing together such a community, rallying so many selfless passions and forging such fraternity. This community includes the dedicated volunteers, very often amateur watercolourists, working tirelessly behind the scenes, organising and running exhibitions and events of all sorts to bring our artistic aspirations to life. And let’s not forget the artists themselves, who put a great deal of effort into passing on their knowledge and experience. The unwavering motivation and love of watercolour of all these people are what makes our community such a close-knit artistic family.
In this issue, you’ll find an interview with American artist Lynn D. Pratt, who founded the Women in Watercolor online competition that rewards and showcases the best women watercolourists. We also interviewed Chris Myers, current president of the prestigious Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours that was founded almost two centuries ago – proof if any proof was needed that the passion for watercolour has a long history. These two interviews, amongst many others in this winter issue, reveal a genuine fervour for watercolour, as well as an unshakeable respect for its practitioners. Picasso once wrote: “The meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life is to share it.” Surely he had watercolour in mind.
